Tortuga Island

Almost everywhere in Costa Rica you can appreciate the view of the lush green foliage or beautiful white sand beaches or, better yet, both. There are several islands in Costa Rica that are worth including on a trip to Central America, and one of the most prominent is Isla Tortuga, located off the southeast coast of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Accessible only by boat, but there are several tours in Costa Rica that can take visitors from a variety of cities. There are several larger cities on the peninsula and tons of nature reserves and cozy beaches, too.

Tortuga Island is a popular day trip for many tourists, with boats and catamarans departing from nearby cities on a daily basis.

How to get

Tortuga Island is one of the two islands that make up the Negritos Islands Biological Reserve on the Nicoya Peninsula. Although overnight stays on the island are not something normal or habitual, there are several tourism companies in Costa Rica, in the northern region of Puntarenas, who are happy to help visitors enjoy a magical day on Tortuga Island.

Excursions are often booked from the neighboring coastal town of Jacó in Puntarenas or from the popular Montezuma. The distance from the departure point will determine the duration of the boat trip to the island, but along the way, travelers will be able to enjoy watching whales, dolphins and other marine species frolicking in the ocean.

What to do on the Island

Whether visitors want to spend the day relaxing on the beach or walking the wooded trails of Isla Tortuga or doing both, they can easily accomplish their goals in one day. Beach dwellers will be happy to see upon arrival a large white sand beach with sun loungers and umbrellas that can be rented for a nominal and reasonable fee.

There’s plenty of food, and a supply of refreshing drinks and fresh fruit that is synonymous with Costa Rican hospitality.

Visitors are free to sunbathe all day or venture out into the water, where they can snorkel and swim. Beach volleyball and other activities, such as glass bottom boat rides or kayaking, are also available. On the other hand, the most adventurous people can choose to go hiking in the hills of the nature reserve, either to enjoy wildlife or to reach the top of the Island.

The dense foliage of the island serves as home to a wide variety of native fauna, birds, and insects. Those looking for an adrenaline rush might be tempted to try the action of the canopy ride as part of an adventure excursion. In this way, visitors can see the sights before and during a trip to the heart of the forest.

In water

The most loved activities on or near Tortuga Island are opportunities to experience sea creatures. Although divers and divers will undoubtedly get to see a dizzying array of fish, they can also expect to witness larger animals like manta rays, dolphins, sharks, and octopuses. There are even some treasures buried there, literally.

Off the coast of Isla Tortuga there are three shipwrecks that offer many opportunities to explore the wreckage of wrecked vessels and all the wonders found in and around them. It’s not every day that divers visit three separate boats on a diving excursion!

Before returning to the mainland, Isla Tortuga visitors should plan to capture some photos of the beautiful sunset over the Pacific. After a day of rest and / or exploration, visitors will not want to leave this tropical paradise.
